My Other Kids….

When I met my husband and we decided in quick order that we might be cohabitating in the near future… I warned him that I came with critters.  I told him I’d always have a horse, a dog, and I had no idea what else, but a menagerie was pretty much a given.

Now I KNEW that he did not grow up with animals… the one dog the family had did not work out very well, and they keep beautiful, immaculate homes.  He was used to a very neat and tidy order of things and I had a feeling this might be a HUGE adjustment for both of us.

And it has been.  However in his defense, he has risen to the occasion many times and has even gone above and beyond, much to his own chagrin!  I do keep an acceptably clean home, but  I have two signs in our house, just to keep it light, you see….

What’s a little dog hair among friends?
and
 Welcome to the Zoo!
oh, and this one too…because it applies…
The buck doesn’t even slow down here
So, yeah.. there’ve been adjustments.  *ahem*…
and cats and rabbits and fish and hamsters and chickens
and  a rat (briefly.. I think for 24 hours… he drew the line.)
Right now, these are our other kids…
Bailey is below.. terrier mix extraordinare. Wonderful dog.
Rudy.. the pisspot.  He is called this because..
at every chance, if you aren’t looking, he will pee on something to mark it HIS.
He liked it better when he was briefly an only child.
This is his way of telling us he is not thrilled to have siblings.
When Bailey came to live with us Rudy wouldn’t eat.
For days.
I took him to the vet… and the vet said
“Anything new in the house?  He’s depressed”
Ofcourse the new thing was Bailey.
Then the vet said
“Let’s try antidepressants”
I said “Hell no, he’ll just have to SUCK IT UP, thank you”.
Don’t judge me.
Rudy has been a pain in the a** ever since, but we love him anyway.
Rudy is lucky my daughter, in particular, really loves him.
When she moves out some day, he goes with her.
My Big Boy Ben….
 It’s hot today and he’s slack’n.
Actually we all are.
Opie, my QH gelding

Coady & Lacey, my minis….

Now I have promised, since we are building a barn again…
that I will keep the numbers down.
You all will keep me to it, right?
Right.

  1. I would say I will keep you to your word, but I honestly don't think I'd be much help! We saw a Golden Retriever puppy at Petco the other day when we were buying treats and I wanted to steal him and bring him home! You are very fortunate to have a husband that has welcomed living in a zoo. My husband never had pets growing up either so I bought him a puppy as a wedding gift and he's been hooked ever since. Give all of your sweet kids a hug for me!

    Kat 🙂

  2. I will NOT let you be a collector of horses!!! No sir-e. I've got my hands full here too. Just remember how long they could possibly live. If you only knew the stories of animals around here. I think my house lights up at night flashing "Suckers – Suckers"!! What do ya do? It takes special people to love special animals. ~ Debi

  3. Well, I know you are a good person by the fact that you kept the PixxPot and made him suck it up…but love him anyway! What's a little pee smell among friends, anyway? xo Diana

  4. It can't be helped. Sometimes ya just look into the eyes of an animal and they choose YOU. And then you just have to take them home. It's a sickness so don't even try to get over it, unless of course you know of a great 12 step program.

  5. Awww, what's a couple hundred more animals?? Heehee, you may call me an enabler;p
I am a crazy cat lady myself, we have 4 plus a dog that thinks she's a cat-how could she not?-Dog hair is as commom as salt and pepper in most meals here..yikes.

  6. Where did Rudy come from? Never heard of him before…i love them all…but then I yold Ben…I come with dogs too…my cat actually lived with him before I did!

  7. If I had the energy and the sayso, I'd have a house full of critters and have had. I say… more power to ya! The more the merrier! You certainly have room for them.

  8. As much as I love my husband and my daughters, I will ALWAYS have pets in the house. It's that unconditional love thing that keeps me coming back for more.

I was folding laundry a little while ago. It was quite a challenge, with Alice flopped in front of me wallowing around begging to be held. Of course, I stopped what I was doing and hugged her. Right now, Dorothy is sleeping beside me here on the couch, and Emma and Daniel are in their beds. Peaceful kingdom, I tell you.

The photo of Bailey is wonderful!

  9. i love your menagerie!!! they're all beautiful! can't wait 'til your horses come back home so we can see more of them here! such lovelies!

  10. But wait, what about the chickens? They count too 🙂 Love the story you and hubby have "created" over the years- its such a rich and flavorful one and always love hearing about some aspect of it. I'm off to the barn…

  11. wow you do have some critters! I love the horse, so beautiful and muscular. I love animals like you but just have my two pups for now. would love a big dog, but maybe in a while. hope you are having a great monday.

  12. You really do have a zoo. I have just two cats — I am afraid of dogs :). My husband isn't such a fan of the cats, but I adore cats. Love the photos of all your loved ones :). Joni

  13. Please fill the barn up, put a west wing on it and fill it with critters. Hey, misery loves company. Loved meeting your other kids, cracked me up reading it. And the depressed Rudy..LOL, thats too much. Suck it up Rudy. And your daughter is gorgeous.
I really feel for your husband.

  14. How can anyone not love dogs, a very nice post. I love your farm by the way…………….Also please drop by my blog to a brand new post today from old order Mennonite Jean on helping her Amish neighbor build their new home. And look for Jeans first ever recipe (whoopie pies) on Amish Stories this Wednesday. Richard

  15. I will be of no help.
    Whatsoever….
    Any time soon.
    Nada.
    Nope.
    Not not one bit.
I just took in a preggie cat.
I think we are doomed, Karen….

love those mini's and Opie and the pooches!!!!!
    Cadence sends smooches!
    xo, misha

  16. LOL
if you expected one of your loyal blogfriends to keep you to your word, you must be so disappointed right now.
And no, I won't be of any help either.

The little horses are too cute. And I do love a horse with muscles, so I adore Opie.

And Ben. Love him. Not a big fan of small dogs, but that's because we don't have one. Or we don't have one because of that. Yet 😉

I think you need a couple of pigs. Just to make the zoo complete 😉
