How do you measure a life?

Regardless of your station in life,  experiences good and bad,  bank account balance, job description or living quarters… if you’ve got good friends who you can count on, who you can trust with your most neurotic thoughts and dumbest mistakes,  who think of you often and make you laugh even on your crappiest day – your life is  rich.

I’ve been blessed with a handful of truly terrific friends over the years and I’m finding that even the blog world is an extension. We may not see each other often, but the message between us  is always clear.  No matter what’s going on in the daily grind, there is always this…

 I’m here for you
We’ll always be “us”
Oh Shut up, you’re being ridiculous
Not all of my friends would appreciate a photo here,
but I’m sneaking in the few that I think will tolerate it …

What? You don’t believe me?
 So..Why am I sappy today?
This little guy was delivered to my door this morning.
Thank you, Raven – He’s perfect.
The song on my playlist is Seasons of Love by Rent.
My daughter introduced me to the song recently and I love it.
 Lyrics below…

Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes,
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Moments so dear.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights
In cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.

In five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure
A year in the life?

How about love?
How about love?
How about love?
Measure in love
Seasons of love.
Seasons of love

Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes!
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Journeys to plan.

Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure the life
Of a woman or a man?

In truths that she learned,
Or in times that he cried.
In bridges he burned,
Or the way that she died.

It’s time now to sing out,
Tho’ the story never ends
Let’s celebrate

Remember a year in the life of friends
Remember the love!
Remember the love!
Seasons of love!

Oh you got to got to
Remember the love!
You know that love is a gift from up above
Share love, give love spread love
Measure measure your life in love

  1. So true about friends; many times they hold us up when we feel let down. Your friends look so sweet. And, it just warmed my heart to see the pic of my son! 🙂

    Have a great day!

  2. I was trying to get the bokeh hearts to work for a photo but haven't gotten it to come out yet- but you nailed it! Love the header 🙂 Would love to see the show Rent as I've always been a fan of the music…

  3. Great little gnome…what are friends for but to mail you something that will make you smile? What~No picture of Nate Berkus? lol Hugs- Diana

  4. I'm dealing with several devastating situations at the moment and what you say couldn't be closer to the truth if it bit me in my hail-damaged arse.

    Love it and thank you.

  5. Love the new look to the blog – your previous renditions wouldn't allow me to open your blog and I was reading, but not commenting, in my Blog Reader. Love the script look to the titles 🙂

If you haven't seen the movie Rent, try and rent (ha) a copy. It's very good – and this is one of my favorite songs.

    Great sentiment today, Karen.

  6. Friends, old and new are so important. I'm heading out to spend the day with my best friend of 51 years. Our birthdays are both within the week so we're celebrating with dinner out, just us two Aquarians.

  7. Weird. Brad never mentioned you. And we had dinner just the other night 😉

I like my friends better than I do my family. Hmm.

  8. So true, Karen. Lovely post, and it reminds me of my friends and how blessed I am.

Oh, and Brad? He might be the best of all!

    xo

  9. Rent is my favorite musical. We saw on stage and it stayed with me for days after. The entire CD is amazing and the song above is my favorite.

Friends are very special and necessary…sort of like breathing.

  10. I just stumbled upon your blog. Your home is lovely!! I really like homes with history. I was going through your blog and found your chicken blog. I wanted to share with you my thoughts on this. Last spring I decided I wanted to raise chickens. They came one day old (12 leghorns). They lived in a plastic swimming pool in my family room until they were big enough to be in the chicken coop…or when they start flying!!! I didn't need chickens all over my house. Anyway, I wanted free range chickens so they had free run over my backyard. Well my garden area was beautiful!! All new bark and my hostas were gorgeous…veggies were doing great and all was beautiful….until my chickens got into these things. Long story short, free range is great, but not in the garden! At least not as many as I had (13 – I lost one leghorn but purchased two full grown banties). I love my girls and enjoy visiting them every day. They are in the coop now because of the snow. I love going in by them to hear them coo. Do it…and I don't even eat eggs!!! But those that are on the receiving end of my eggs, say they're de-lish!! Good luck to you!!! Amy B

  11. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! I LOVE you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!♥♥♥

minimum. i'll share my playlist with you 🙂
and then we could go out dancing with our crippled up backs and shoulders. wow. we could really be good time.

    LOL

  13. Well, imagine my surprise to see a pic of me and Kid on your blog – how nice to be in such good company!
Some friends just make you feel like you have landed in a safe harbor…a quiet place where you can float for awhile until you're ready to take on the wind again.

    That's you.

    H-

  14. I didn't know that song either…and now I am going to have to go and rent the movie…Nothing is too sappy around Valentine's day!

  15. You made our day. *love, love, love*
Gnomes are just happy little guys, huh?
And I love that song….has been one of my audition songs for a while!
    *hugs*

  16. Karen, I love this. Where would we be without our friends? Or who would I be without my friends? My heart feels big. Thank you.

  17. Yes, I don't know where I'd be without my friends — both online and off, they are what keeps me going.

The song? Oh yeah, my granddaughter and I used to know the words by heart. How true, how true — each and every word, each and every minute.

  18. i think it might be the song that made you feel a bit sappy. 🙂 i say, only having read the lyrics – i don't think i know that song.

that said, friends are pretty cool, even when they send you gnomes. 🙂

  19. Hi! I just stumbled onto your blog today and this one made me laugh. I live in the Kansas City area and since Brad grew up in Springfield, MO (about two hours south of KC) and went to school at the University of MO (about 90 minutes east of KC), it's NOT unusual to run into people who actually knew him.

I can't wait to dive further into your blog!
