Crowded Carrots

So, this being our first YEAR OF THE REALLY BIG GARDEN, we made a few mistakes that we will correct next year.  One is the crowded planting of carrots.  While we yielded a big bucket full of short stunted carrots, it would have been nice to have them grow to full size and maturity. Not possible when you plant them all together in a big seed patch.

How NOT to grow carrots…
They need to be thinned out at this stage, because if you don’t…
they all jam together and can’t grow..and so you get THIS….

Proper way to grow carrots below – these have been thinned out…

 Live and learn, right?
Now.. what to do with a big bucket of stunted carrots…

  1. I have done that before. 🙁 This year I spilled a radish seed packet into a 4×2 area. I had hundreds of radishes I had to thin. The odd thing is once I thinned a few the ones I thought would not grow, grew like crazy! I had HUGE radishes this year.

  2. girl, you just made those perfect little "snack size" carrots that they sell in the grocery store…get to peeling!

  3. i don't know…i kind of like the stunted ones. they remind me of the oompa loompas on willy wonka 🙂

  4. Do you own a Jack LaLane Power Juicer? I use mine all the time and am constantly buying carrots. You do not even have to peel them. I mix carrots, beets, and apples and we drink this a lot. The kids even drink it. It is very healthy and I know that we are getting our vitamins for each day even if we don't eat as many fresh veggies as we should at mealtime.

  5. I read all of the above I say go with feeding to the pony, horses will love it too they will want more than one!
