Hush

The world is so quiet right now…

This will sound odd, but as a hearing impaired person this has never been more striking for me. What I still hear on a normal day are none of the beautiful nuances, cadence  and understandable language of a human voice. No musical magic that can carry you to a better frame of mind in minutes. No bird song.

What I still  hear on a normal day are all the loud irritating noises we humans produce – car engines, plane jets, train whistles, car horns, shouting , machines, door slams, the thump of a heavy object dropped, etc.

As I stood in my driveway this morning I suddenly noticed it- all of that irritating noise is gone. Walkers pass by and wave with a smile. A biker glides past. No planes overhead, no cars driving by.

Just Peace and quiet.

Scary times we are living in, so much uncertainty and fear. I’m no expert who should be handing out advice, but this is universal, good advice for anyone , isn’t it?

Find the silver lining wherever you are

Wishing us all good health, healing ..  peace of mind. ❤️   …. and… a  fragrant purple hyacinth on  each of our kitchen window sills next to a vase of nature’s treasures we’ve collected in a past day well spent.

  1. Beautiful thoughts, Karen. No matter the tragedy of the times, flowers still push their heads up and send out their perfumes, birds greet the morning sun, forsythia smiles all over the place, and trees get ready to unfurl their welcome shade.
This will pass, not soon but eventually. Here’s hoping we come out the other side wiser, kinder, and more prepared for the realities of a warmer climate and the unknowns it will bring.

  2. Hello

The silence is nice, I enjoy listening to the birds singing. I think we all can think positive calm thoughts.
Love the flowers. Stay safe, stay well! Have a great new week!

  3. It’s very quiet here too. I said one day that it seemed like Sunday morning….every day! Take care of yourself and I hope you and your sweet family are all well and safe.

  4. It is quiet here too. I do hear small private planes flying over head. We have been listening to the birds sing….

  5. The French are pretty strict about what they do when, so weeknights have always been quiet in my corner of deepest France. I would lie in bed and listen as the predawn stillness would be broken by a scooter (undoubtedly driven by some bakery intern, considering the hour) sputtering its way, up a hill, down the other side, then up and down the next ridge, through the village, past the house, and on up the hill, around the curve and out to the next village. Now it’s like that all day, every day, and even more quiet at night.
It was even more still where I lived in Africa. No electricity. Almost no cars, and certainly a car at night was cause for fear–an emergency or somebody up to no good. But also no furnace or A/C kicking on. No refrigerator humming. No non-natural sounds at all. Just shrieks and cries of night birds and animals (we had monkeys!). It was a cacophony; the stillness was from the absence of human/machine sound.

    1. Thank you for sharing that. Different places, different times, ordinariness, nature, a connection with something that is not now, not a virus, not the unknown.

  6. I’ve noticed that too. We live under a flight path. We’re not that close to the airport so they aren’t low but you still hear the planes if it’s not too noisy out with cars or other sounds. There are no cars out, or very few. And I haven’t heard a single plane in days. I’m sure flights are still coming in — but not many and not often. I hear the birdsong so much more clearly now. And children playing. And it’s beautiful.

  7. We live close to the Naval Air Station, and very seldom hearing the jets nowadays.

Occasionally, I hear the train at night.

    Love your purple flower.

I picked up the ‘owner’ of this homestead last night; not saying much and still having difficulty walking, but I’m glad she’s here. With the hope, of course, no bugs came with her.

I’m a slug lately. But, it’s a really beautiful day here now so maybe I’ll go out and do some more yard work. Maybe. 🙂
