On Nutrition…

There is no doubt, when we eat foods that are good for our body on a regular basis, we feel better. No rocket science there…   If you put crap gas in your engine, you’re gonna get crap performance.

With this in mind, I’ve been making changes over the years to my family’s diet with better health in mind.  Are there oreos in the pantry?  You betcha.  Frozen waffles for those breakfast quick fixes?  Yup.  M & M’s in the candy jar! And, we’ve got cheeses and pepperoni in the coldcut drawer.   I’ve never been an ALL OR NOTHING kinda gal, and that’s not gonna change with our diet if I’m being realistic.   Bottom line is, we all have to choose a method that we can respect for a life time commitment.  That’s why the fad diets ultimately don’t work! You’re not gonna eat bacon and eggs only or grapefruit  – forever- .   Portion control is important too.  My husband has struggled with weight issues and in the past has been a big fan of the Atkins diet.  He was very successful in losing weight on that plan, but ultimately the weight came back because it’s not a diet you want to be on forever, and it’s just not good for you.

What I’m really liking right now is the smoothies I’ve been making, recommended by my friend Lynn, who has always been pretty health conscious.  She has the Vitamix blender, which is expensive, but does a phenomenal job.  I opted for a less expensive blender which does ALMOST as good a job, but not really. Especially if you  are texture challenged and want your green smoothies REAAALLY smooth. My husband saw the NutriBullet advertised on TV, and so we ordered it.  He is now making protien and fruit shakes too.

We are very pleased with it’s performance.  And, for $100, it’s affordable.

My favorite breakfast shake –
Greek vanilla yogurt, honey, flax seed oil, blueberries, bananas, almond milk

The green shake I find drinkable and good tasting consists of
a big handful of baby spinach, parsley, an apple cut up, half a banana, coconut milk
and a dash of lemon juice.
My husband has been using this livestrong app on his ipad to track his calorie intake…
I’m not a charts and graphs checker, but he loves it and finds it keeps him motivated.
I also did some checking up on the Dog food I feed my dogs…
and I will admit I do not buy the most expensive brands, because I’ve got four dogs,
one weighing 190 lbs.  We buy ALOT of dog food.
What I found?  The wet food I feed gets a great rating, that’s awesome.
The Dry food?  Not so much… at all.
Here’s the link if you are interested in seeing how well your dog food of choice holds up
in the nutrition department.

  1. Love my smoothies! Yours sound excellent. I have a Ninja, which does a great job.. but yep, always wanted a Vitamix. I need to read up on dog food again too.. thanks for the link! -Tammy

  2. It sounds like we have a similar approach to healthy eating! Moderation and no big change "cold turkey" as we say around here! 😉 Your smoothie sounds delicious right now, and I think they're a great idea! I just have a cheap blender but can see the appeal to have one that really blends everything together perfectly.
    Blessings,
    Leslie

  3. I believe in the 80-20 rule. Eat on the healthy side 80 percent of the time.

I've switched all of our pet's food to no grains/meat based food. I have noticed great improvement in some TMI stuff. Like no gas from our dog and less poopies from the cats.

  4. I would love to buy a Vitamix but just cannot handle the price. We used our juicer for a while last year and enjoyed that, but it's very expensive to do that since it takes tons of fruit to make a small amount. Too much waste and the cleanup was…ugh.
We switched our dogs to Solid Gold after our vet told us that Zoey wasn't looking shiny enough. They are both doing very well on it, but I'll check the app.

  5. It's the cost factor that keeps me from doing the shakes with any blender. The food cost. Now, if I had my own garden and fruit orchard I would probably go for it.

As for the pups…. well.. have to keep things affordable so they aren't being fed as well as they should be with a wet brand. Life just is what it is sometimes and you do what you can to be a good pet owner. 🙂

  6. I need to be more conscious of my diet, but I can't imagine starting my day with a cold smoothie, versus hot coffee! Especially considering lately I've been freezing my butt off! I never used to get this cold.

  7. When my daughter lived closer she would make me a smoothie every morning and I would stop at her house and drink it on my way to work. Loved them! I need to invest in a blender that does smoothies!

  8. I get on smoothie kicks and use my standard blender. Yours look and sound great!

You wouldn't believe the way I've been eating lately with no one here but myself. 🙂

  9. Lose It! is a good app for your smart phone. Free and tracks calories and workout.
Highly recommend. For iPhone and Android.
And did I mention it is FREE?

  10. Looks good k !!!! I use lose it app for iPhone and its great everything you can think of is on there !!! Have a great day

  11. I have a Bullet at the studio…it was only $50……I've had it awhile….but it works well.
I put the cut up banana in the freezer and then make a shake with it, makes it really thick.
    I want a Vitamix….maybe someday.

  12. I've been feeding my dogs a lamb and rice Diamond food from Tractor Supply–More expensive than Purina, but affordable. I'm beginning to think that all pets do best on wet food without grain–they are carnivores you know! I know that cats fed wet food don't have the urinary tract problems that dry food causes. I just have 3 cats and as of now (counting son's)–5 dogs! It's got to be affordable!
I'm beginning to think grain fed humans are getting fattened up just like corn fed cows! I've got to do something or I'm going to have to go UP a pant size! As for now I've just got to get through til June 1! My job is so stressful that I'm using food to numb myself! I have cut out carbonated beverages and added more fruit/veg. but chips are my downfall!

  13. K, the dog food advisor thing is really neat too.

Yup, I'm with you–about balance and something that can work. I have thought about stuff a lot more since I had kids and started baking a *little* bit differently. Now, with the drinks, are they meant to add to your meals vitamins & stuff, or do you just drink that drink instead of breakfast etc? It looked so yummy!

  14. My birthday is Friday. Guess what I plunked some cash down for? A Vitamix. On QVC, good deal, free shipping. Mine. It's red. I'm kinda in love. Been doing the green smoothies too – I just use water instead of the almond and/or coconut milk. So far my favorite one is a frozen banana, half an apple, half a pear and fill the rest of the blender container up with spinach, and about a quarter of cup of water. Delish.
