Scenic Route 100, Vermont

We handcuffed the kids to the inside of the truck so that we could spend some quality family time on a scenic ride up north today.   (bread and water were provided, sanity wasn’t part of the deal).

I can happily report we all seemed to enjoy the trip once the heavy sighs and eye-rolling and proclamation of ruination of any kind of social life subsided.  Duct tape had nothing to do with it, I swear.

Vermont’s Route 100 is  one of the most scenic roads in New England with incredible mountain views.   Running north-south, it starts at the Canadian border and ends at the Vermont/Massachusetts border.

 The water is so clear.

We rented this log cabin once. It sits on the VAST trails… awesome for snowmobiling.
We were thrilled to find it again and see it when it’s not under three feet of snow.
The Silo at the base of Mt. Snow.. great hot cider and burgers.

Two things that stood out today… the colors were OK, but not spectacular…and as we got farther up into the state it was clear we had actually missed the colors.  The other thing… and this really bothers me… is that there are so many vacant houses and so many businesses either closed or stuggling.  One of my favorite stops in the Mt. Snow area  is Adams Farm… an old family farm in business since 1865. They made great fudge, goats milk soap and syrup. There were sleigh rides in the winter and Hay wagon rides in the fall and an extensive farmyard petting zoo.  When we pulled in  I thought it looked vacant…and indeed, it’s closed and going out of business. The farm is for sale due to the down-turn in the economy.
I found this article online… I wish I could tell the family how sorry I am that this has happened, and that they will be missed.
*sigh*   Something’s gotta give.

  1. So beautiful. We are waiting for the trees to turn here. Some have but there is still a lot of green. It is ashamed that so many business and wonderful places to visit have had to close. I hope something changes soon.

  2. Leaves are just beginning to turn here. I don't think it's going to be as spectacular with color as it was last year.

You should have gone and knocked on Hilary's door. Probably would have knocked her socks off from the surprise of it all. LOL

  3. This sounds like it was a very neat trip and I'll bet the kids actually enjoyed it! There must have been some sweet memories form your stay at the little cabin and what a shame about the Adam's farm. I really hate to see the family businesses go under…the little guys. I thought it was just me.

    Great post, Karen!

    XO,

  4. So sad, another business closed, another family affected, such a shame.
But my gosh, what a beautiful state that is, really loved those shots.
And handcuffing the kids…..priceless, and funny

  5. I am coming to Vermont!!! Your pictures are gorgeous! Some of the leaves are starting to change a bit, but we don't get the glorious amounts of color here. I have always wanted to visit Vermont or Connecticut in the winter and ride in a real live sleigh! Maybe one day! So glad you had some quality family time even if it did involve duct tape! 🙂

  6. It is sad about all the businesses closing isn't it? I can't believe the things that have closed in the past couple of years. We had an entire MALL close a mile or so from us. Wah??

I keep thinking about your store and other lovely stores like it.

    Makes me sad!

  7. I know. It is very depressing seeing long-time businesses shut down. I see it everywhere here – and I saw it in San Diego, as well.

I love Vermont. Such a beautiful state.

  8. Oh, how I miss New England!!! I just got home from Boston, and I realized that you can take the girl out of New England but you can't take New England out of the girl.

  9. Born in Mass. and spending alot of time at the Cape growing up, I miss New England and didn't even realize it until we started driving around!! We found some amazing places and it has been great visiting my brother who I have not seen in a couple of years. It is very sad to see that so many of the small businesses are going out of business. I have seen many of them in the past week. Great post Karen!! Glad you got some quality time in…duct tape and all!
