Dog Days Adoption Event at Mystic Valley Hunt Club!

On August 27 & 28  we will host a Dog Days Adoption Event at Parmelee Farm.  I went to the Mystic Valley Hunt Club Dog Days yesterday in Ledyard to get a feel for how it was set up, and to take some pictures for the organization.   I had tears in my eyes as soon as I walked onto the premises… so many happy faces, so many dogs meeting with their new families… in just the first four hours, 55 of the 80 dogs had been adopted, and by the end of the day, the tally was 70.  Today my hope is that the remaining dogs will find their forever homes. Many of these dogs were rescued from kill shelters – they were on death row.

Lorin Greene, founder of Go Dog Days, is doing wonderful things.
You go girl.. and GO DOG DAYS!!!

Lemonade, Anyone?

Today is the first day of the Bid, Barter, Bake & Bark sale held at the lovely Essex, CT home of Lorin G., Founder of Dog Days Adoption Events – at 101 N. Main Street.   I snuck over and took some pics… including a few of this adorable fellow who needs a home.  His story is a horror, notice he has no ears.  You’d never know it by his awesome disposition with kids, other dogs, and people in general.  How he managed to trust in humans after what he was put through as a pup attests to the true loving, loyal nature of the dog.
If you live near Essex, tomorrow is another day for the sale. Come have a cupcake, a glass of fresh squeeszed lemonade made by these lovely little ladies, browse the treasures and meet this handsome guy!

Is he a love, or what?….

For The Dogs

Hi All – I have posted before about the Dogs Days Shelter Dog Adoption Event we are going to hold in August.  Up until the event, we will be raising funds to cover the expenses of the weekend itself, such as food for volunteers, tent rental for shade for the dogs and rescue groups, porta potties, insurance fees, etc….

..and I had an idea.  So many of my blog friends are talented people who make stuff, and love dogs as much as I do!  I would love to host a fundraiser here on my blog containing items that YOU donate to the cause.  As in… if you are a weaver, perhaps you would be willing to donate a set of dish towels or a handbag or a small rug.  If you are a jewelry artist, maybe a pair of earrings or a necklace. Are you a potter? – a set of mugs or a pretty bowl.  Are you an antique collector? Maybe there is a piece you no longer have room or use for in your home.

I’ve never done this before, so here’s how I think it could work, but feel free to give me advice.  I design a post with a picture of each of the donated items and the “purchase price” to be determined by the crafter who donates the item.  BUYERS leave a comment stating they want to buy that item.  I contact buyer and “seller” and put you in contact with each other.  Buyer sends check written out to the Dog Days Adoption Event, mailed to me (I will provide mailing addresses upon request) and Seller (Donating crafter) ships item to Buyer.

So, what do you think?  Any interest? ….. bad idea?  I’m open to suggestions… See flyer below..

Dog Days Adoption Event August 27 & 28

So, the Event is shaping up!.. Porta-potties have been donated (Thank you Mike Finkeldey!) and one Tent has been rented… still need another. We’re working on food…  Fundraiser is under way… see flyer below if you are local and want to donate a baked good or item for the bid/barter/bake sale to be held in Essex July 2-3rd.  I’ll be happy to pick up any baked goods or tag sale items, just e-mail me at karenthisoldhouse@hotmail.com

And.. if any of you locals are interested in volunteering at the Event on August 27 & 28, we are in need of YOU!!  Experience with dogs is helpful but not necessary… there are many ways, big and small, that you can participate.  Please fill out the form on their website if you want to volunteer. The link is below…  For teens, it’s a community service hours opportunity!…

http://www.godogdays.org/Volunteers.html

You can also donate any monitary value by clicking on the “donate” link on their site at the following link… all proceeds go directly to the expenses such as transport of dogs, feeding of volunteer and dogs, tent rental, etc..for that event.

Together we can make a difference and save the lives of  these dogs who are on death row…

If you’re thinking of adding a dog to your family, please consider coming to meet the 80 dogs that will be in attendance at Parmelee Farm at the August Event.  There will be puppies as well as adult and senior dogs.

Words from their website….

“DOG DAYS is a non-profit, mobile “pop up” shelter dog adoption event in Connecticut. Our event philosophy is based on the premise “it takes a village to rescue a dog” and we rely on the community volunteers, merchants and civic organizations from the town that “hosts” our event, to take part in the adoption weekend.
Each event will have 80 dogs for adoption, 40 large breed dogs and 40 small breeds and puppies. They will all have been seen by a vet, current on all shots and spayed or neutered. Rescues from around the state of Connecticut are invited and beyond if we can’t find enough dogs to fill the event. Training demonstrations as well as grooming information, diet, veterinary care and more are at every event to help a new adopter take care of their new best friend. “

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to help out with this event…
Lord help me  find the strength to not bring home another dog
lest I want a divorce immediately thereafter.
I suppose that will depend on the day.
More to come….
