Master Bedroom

This bedroom is the new kid on the block, not part of an old structure, but we incorporated post and beam construction and those large beams you see in the ceiling are from an old Pennsylvania barn.  They are beautiful, one of my favorite features of the house.  They’re also infested with bugs!  Actually, ALL the beams in the house have microscopic bugs.   I had no idea.   Apparently it comes with the territory, centuries old beams & bugs.
We have beam bugs, people.

Start to finish…
bedroom addition to the left…
This is the Paula Deen Savannah bed I found online.. assembly required… yeah that was fun.  It comes in either an off-white or tobacco finish. I love this shade, very warm and I wanted to bring in some contrast.
I’m trying to figure out what would look good on either side of the photo above the headboard. It’s a matted picture I photoshopped into a watercolor of one of our old cats lying under a barrel filled with geraniums.
This area needs help.
An old chair from my office in the previous house.. very comfortable and worn in.
But this area needs something too.
One thing I always splurge on is good quality sheets.  My mother would probably iron these after each washing because the trim would look so much better.  The apple rolled way down the hill from that tree…..
Pillows-Pier One Imports, duvet below – Pottery Barn…
Not sure where to hang this Robin… an art quilt by artist Vivika Denegre (see blog roll, beautiful work)
The white kitten is a ceramic figure I made for my grandmother 35 years ago. She always kept it on the floor of her bedroom, using it as a doorstop.  When she moved to Florida it took up the same space at her condo.   When Nana passed away I brought the kitten home and it sits on my dresser so it doesn’t get trampled by the zoo.
Last night with slumber fast approaching,  I gazed dreamily into those
1,000 lb. beams and asked the obvious question…
“There’s no chance those things would ever, like, fall down  on us or anything, would they? “
And in a drowsy haze and heavy sigh,  the answer came soft and simple.
“If they did? ..you’de never know.”
Ok then.

  1. HA… yep, you would never know. I used to wonder the same thing when we lived in Maryland and had 80 foot oak trees not far from the back of the house. If they ever came down on the wrong room at the wrong times… well…. we'd never have known either! Was kind of creepy the year the hurricane came through our area and one of the trees actually did fall… but it fell parallel with the house… Whew!! That was a close call.

Your bedroom is coming together nicely. It takes time not only to build a house, but to build a home.

  2. Your bedroom looks amazing. You have a very cozy touch with your decorating. The white on white quilt with the starfish on it, I also have at my cottage. I got it at Out of the Blue, a little shop that sells beachy, cottagy stuff. It's right near me and I visit often. Re those bugs. It's kinda like with mold. Just don't open up the exit. Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite, and if they do, take your shoe, and whack them 'till they're black and blue.
P.S. I don't think there really is such a word as cottagy which is why spell check doesn't catch it.

  3. Your bedroom is just beautiful. I love that bed. I mean seriously love that bed! What if you took two pictures of similar geraniums up close and photoshopped them to go on each side. Ok… what do you do about bugs in the beams? Do they just keep to themselves? Your room is coming along beautifully and you will find the perfect pieces as you go along (like the cat from your Nana…perfect!).

  4. I love, love , LOVE your bedroom. It's beautiful.
The beam is my favourite part of the room…. bugs and all ๐Ÿ™‚ We have little bugs in our tv cabnet… they leave like a light sawduststuff on the furniture… Do your bugs do that?

  5. You mรกde that kitten? Gosh. Very creative!

Lovely bedroom. I'm sure you'll find the right things to make it look and feel even better. Shame about the bugs. Don't the beams have to be treated or are they not harmful for the wood?

  6. Wow – what a lovely bedroom! I can only dream of having that much space. The bed is beautiful and all your touches are making it the perfect haven.

  8. Ummmmmmmmmmmmm – I was thinking more like "You don't think any of those BUGS will fall down us will they????" Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  9. That bedroom is seriously huge! Is that matelasse bedding? I love that stuff!

That kitten is darling. What is it made out of that it could be used as a doorstop?

  10. Stunningly gorgeous, just as I knew it would be! I'm seriously thinkin' of moving outta here and up there with you. Could you put me in a tiny little spot with no beams? ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Karen, I don't know how I missed this yesterday. What a big beautiful bedroom, bugs and all. lol Just a suggestion, I would move the nightstands in closer to the bed. The lamps should be reachable from the bed really. An idea for over by the dresser, how about a stack of old suitcases, maybe three in different sizes stacked under the window and that will hide the outlet, too. Over by the chair maybe a big basket to hold blankets or books or two for both and a nice floor lamp and some prints on the wall with them coming down low to anchor the space. Just some ideas!

  12. It is coming together beautifully Karen! But….beam bugs??? Never heard of them! Love the new addition!! You rock at decorating girl!!

  13. Gorgeous! I knew it would be! Love the luxurious bedding-its so nice to rest on fabulous sheets! You have the best taste and style! The beam bugs add a bit of ambiance:)

  14. Hahaha….awww, just look at them as new pets!
Well my dear you have made that bedroom so cozy and lovely.
    Cheers!
