Chickening Out

I don’t really have an explanation, not sure where it’s coming from,  just not my normal thing.  For some reason, chickens have been on my mind when planning the decorating of This Old House.  I’ve had alot of animals over the years – dogs, horses, rabbits, cats, fish, fire-bellied toads and even a rat for a brief while. But never chickens.

I went into Homegoods last night looking for outdoor cushions, certainly not poultry…  and there she was, the perfect chicken for my kitchen.

These wrought iron spacers were made for us to fill in the gap between the loft railing and the fireplace.
Poor image quality, sorry. Downstairs bathroom pedestal sink and toilet installed.
Mancave Flatscreen installed… I had to laugh this morning when I walked in to see the boxes from our current house that contained the electronics packed up by our tv/computer/electronics guru-guy.  He wrote “ManCave” on the box so he would know where to install it.
Throne installed in the master bath.
Finishing touches all weekend, final coat of Tung oil on the floors Tuesday,  Thursday is move-in day!

  1. Chickens are totally hot right now. I have roosters in my kitchen… big, white, ceramic ones. Think I have 4 of them. One or two may have come from Home Goods when we lived in Columbia, Maryland and when we moved to Arizona I added a couple more. Every country home should have at least one chicken or rooster in the kitchen. Love yours!

  2. The chicken looks quite at home there! Aren't you just freaking out with anticipation of moving????? Great Stuff Karen! I'm still looking forward to watching each room come together. You guys have done such a beautiful job. Love the wrought iron spacers!

  3. Karen, dear, I am so happy for you. By next weekend, you will have boxes over your head IN YOUR NEW OLD HOUSE!!! It will finally be HOME instead of a project … been there, done that, and it's WONDERFUL!

  4. Oh my just gorgeous, every last detail is perfect! Love the decorative wrought iron for the rock-climbing fireplace:)
Happy Happy that you are almost there!!

  5. That chicken is great sitting in the window. I love that deep sill as well!

The color of the cabinets in the master bath is great. What is it? Looks like a gray on my screen. A lovely blue-gray.

  6. Karen, you and Mike have done a wonderful job on this house. Colors, details, everything!!!

I'm so happy for you. Moving time is so close.

    Have good weekend.

  7. Love the chicken. She just looks like she overheard a great joke!
Leave it to you to put gorgeous touches on everything and make it a home. Adore the ironwork!

  8. Wrought iron georgeousness going on there. Very elegant.
And your master bathroom mirrors are impressive to say the least. Love them and the lights. And the sinks/cabinet.
Have to say I prefer live chickens (finally something I'm not envious about, hehe), but not in the kitchen window sill. What an exciting day it must be for you, coming Thursday. Good luck with the move. Your new old house is b e a u t i f u l.

  9. For a minute there, I thought you were getting real chickens! They would be fitting with "this old house" don't ya think?? Ha, I like the ceramic one you picked out! Such great accents/details have gone into this house. Love them all! Yay for Thursday!!

  10. Awwww, such a cute chicken! You have such wonderful taste in all that you've done in the new old house. I'm SO excited for you all. 🙂

  11. My hubby got a new Ipad and spent 10 minutes just going through all your old posts and pictures… I knew he'd love your house and design ideas for it… apparently your stove is the one he drooled over a few weeks ago…

I'd get the chicken too 🙂 We're both so inspired now!

  12. You had me going there. I was thinking you were talking live clucking chickens and you found a beautiful chicken for your counter. Pretty cool!

Your home is gorgeous. I hope to have one that lovely some day. The only beautiful thing around here are the horses but for now, they are most certainly enough for me.

  13. big kudos to your metal bender.
I pray you enjoy living there at least half as much as I have enjoyed watching you build it. And any chicken you don't feed or clean up after, is the perfect chicken. But that one LOOKS good.
    You done good Lady.

  14. Love it all, the bathrooms, the mirrors, the iron vine filler for the loft railing….oh my goodness!
I am squealing with delight. This is so up my alley. Love all the molding and paneling. Your garden, your water pump, etc etc etc.
    Ahhhh!
