Painting The Town Red

Oh, I know it’s trivial compared to the world’s troubles…compared to some of OURS for that matter.  But… we came to a crossroads today at This Old House.  Followers of my old blog might remember the war  discussion Mike and I had over his desire for something to be painted crime-scene-dried-blood-red   heritage red  somewhere in the house. Somewhere big. It’s apparently THAT kind of need.  And I love the color, I do!    As accents, not the entire horizon.

So.. I walked into the kitchen as the men stood round staring at the mantle with the various shades of RED..and I was to choose which RED I liked.  Here’s how it goes.

Me:  Red again?  The whole fireplace?
Him:  And the trim.
Me:  The trim where?
Him: Around the whole room…and the cabinets.
Me:  The Cabinets????….
Him:  So where do you want me to stop (pointing DOWN THE HALL AND INTO THE MUDROOM)….
Me:  DOWN THE HALL AND INTO THE MUDROOM?  RED???????
Him:  Yes… I can’t just stop HERE (pointing to the end of the kitchen)
Me:  Oh yes you can.  You’ll stop here.  (pointing to trimwork at end of kitchen)   And the cabinets? Red? REALLY?
Him:  I SUPPOSE YOU HAVE A BETTER IDEA?  Trust me, I know what I’m doing.

I’m gonna have to give in and let him have his way with  heritage red  somewhere… but please..
not here..
in my kitchen.
Trust me….

Mike graded the backyard and made an area for a brick patio…

Steve making progress with the second story of the familyroom/loft fireplace….

This is the trim color I prefer…. Not that there’s anything wrong with red…

Jeff working on the cabinetry…which did not come fully compliant with the old beams of the old house.

Barn/garage moves forward….
A really cool blue paint puddle I found out in the yard….

  1. Nix the red and go for the blue in the mud puddle… LOL

I had one wall of a kitchen painted red and loved it. Not this house, but our previous one. Red can be tricky. Red can be fun. It's only paint so just have fun with it.

  2. I'm with you on the "crime scene red"…can't do it!! Cannot like it!! I tend to be a bit crazy with color…but more in the Bermudian Blue colors! Like the mud puddle blue! That's kind of the color of my living room at the cottage. The house looks great Karen!

  3. Red is good, but on trim?

This is the 3rd house where I've appeased the husband's love of red walls by doing an over-the-top red bathroom. House #1 had red rag-rolling in the master bath (it was the 90's, don't ya know), House #2 had crime-scene red damask wallpaper in the downstairs powder room, and the basement bath in this house will have a red Victorian floral paper.

Everything looks so wonderful at your place now. I bet you can't wait for it too truly be 'home'.

  4. "Trust me" hahahaha!!!!! I cannot wait for the 'finish' of the war on RED!

You crack me up!! Everything is looking SO good!!

  5. Yeah, he needs to get out of the kitchen.

    🙂 teasin!

    How open is this area?

Can't you guys hurry the heck up? Some of us are waiting! Ha!
