Seasonal Decoration – bringing Autumn in

I’ve talked about it before on the blog…
it’s something I think I inherited from my grandmother Elsie.
Her specialty was Christmas… even family photo frames had red bows on them,
no kidding.
The mornings have been cool as I walk up the hill to feed horses.
Leaves are just starting their color change on tops of trees.
I do love summer, but fall is a beautiful thing here in New England.
So is the Pottery Barn catalog… oh, how I love their stuff.
Their use of neutrals had me wanting to lighten up
here at this old house, and so I’ve slowly been
changing inexpensive things here and there
to do just that.
seagrass lampshade on sale at HomeDecorators right now!

I’ve got a thing for white crackled pitchers….

Look at these unusal artificial plants…

The main fireplace mantle is getting it’s fall makeover…
I love owls too…

Brought my garden owl in out of the weather.
Found these at Pier 1, $6.

Added these faded stripe (tick?) cushions to the kitchen barstools…

and some sunflowers and crackled vase…

M & M’s are a staple ’round here.

As far as store bought cookies… if you’ve never had DARE brand Maple cookies?
They are absolutely delicious. Betcha can’t have just one.

Visit your garden center for great deals on end of summer shrubs and perennials…
I picked up a few new cone flower species I have not seen before…
aren’t they beautiful?….
such vivid red..and dusty deep pink

Have a good day, all –
Smile at a stranger, for no good reason…
see how good that can make you feel
when the smile is returned.
It’s the little things, you know.

  1. Your inspired home! I L-O-V-E Pottery Barn too…my work space here needs a make-over! Lovely pics especially the cute owls! And yes, I will make a point to smile more today…

  2. Karen – going to go dig out my autumnal stuff now 🙂 Love autumn and can't wait to wear turtlenecks.

I've not heard of DARE cookies but I never met a cookie I didn't like.

Going to go out now and smile 🙂

  3. I forget how amazing your home is. AMAZING. I love the sunflowers in the pitcher.

Also love those cone flowers! My mom put those in this summer—everything will be toast this fall, we don't really set out fall plants.

  4. I have been working to declutter and pretty up my own dining room, and now you have given me a second wind to push to finish it. I usually don't put anything on the table, but I have a cracked pitcher, and a wooden tray, and those fake flowers are really cool! (sometimes I put real flowers in mine … Just put a large plastic soda cup inside to hold the flowers and water.

I imagine that the hummingbirds and butterflies will be battling each other to see who gets to your new coneflowers first.

  5. I like white pitchers too and keep an eye out for good deals on them. Your owls are sweet!

  6. I noticed a lot of owls when I was at Marshall's the other day. They are so cute and perfect for fall decorations. You home is so beautiful, Karen…very warm and inviting!

  7. I'm a big fan of Pottery Barn. They are part of the Williams Sonoma family and I've always thought Chuck Williams had excellent taste.

Love your Windsor chairs Karen. We collect early American antiques. Your home is very pretty and your decorating makes me look forward to autumn.

  8. Your house looks great no matter the season. Mine never changes… but hopefully the weather will! I'm ready for some cooling off.

  9. The place looks great. Smile at a stranger, I like that. Another good one is, when you interact with someone wearing a nametag, thank them by mentioning their name. Brings a smile everytime.

  10. I'm going back to look at the way you have your seashells in the wire basket. I could do that! And I love all of your sweet owls. I did some extra cleaning and a little decorating today! Feels good!

  11. I love your house so much!!! The beams just make my heart go litter patter, bugs and all!!!!! We have a few leaves beginning to change here and as much as I miss Charleston, I am excited for Fall when it is actually Fall!

  12. Karen,
I love the autumn decorating you have done…what a gorgeous home you have. I gotta say also…I am loving your hair that length. I turned 46 this year and have long hair which I love but part of me is wanting a change….your hairstyle is inspiring me to do make that change. Love your blog!
    Kim 🙂

  14. Hi Karen,

I had to break out a few of my fall decorations last weekend too.

Trader Joe's sells little maple leaf cookies like that. I'll eat half a box at a time!

    Happy almost fall 🙂

  15. How I love your decorating style! It's all about surrounding yourself with the things that strike a chord, make you happy! Those pictures of the red flowers did it for me this morning… smilin' at everyone I see. Hi ya'll!
