At the end of the day

Have you ever known someone who uses a certain phrase, constantly, whenever he or she can fit it in?  Even when it is completely uneccessary or totally redundant?    Mike’s favorite line (besides “what did you buy now“)  is The reality is…”   and I mean, he puts that three words in a place where no one was even searching  for the truth.

“The reality is, we’re not leaving until you pick your stuff up and put it away.”

And just where was the facade in this scenario?

Then we’ve got a soccer/baseball parent who starts every major sentence with  “At the end of the day, when it’s all said and done“…. as in…   “At the end of the day, when it’s all said and done, we’re not gonna win this thing until we start playing as a team”.

That only happens at the end of the day?   And what happens if you didn’t say everything?

Oh, I’m not exempt.  I say “OK then”… when I find there’s really not much more to say or I’m flabbergasted enough to be stumped.    Atleast it’s compliant, right?   An expression of acceptance… like “It is what it Is”….which I’m also guilty of.  Again…harmonious in it’s acceptance of things as they are, no?  It fits just about anywhere if you think about it.

Anyway… the real reason for this post wasn’t that, but this

At the end of the day, when it’s all said and done, the reality is, the light filters down toward This Old House as the sun sets gently over the hill, casting a warm amber glow over her rooms.   I like to take this time to sit with a cup of tea,  put the worries of the day aside and accept that it IS what it IS.

Ok then.

  1. Great post. One phrase that bugs me is 'in theory'.. don't know why in particular but it does. So, like, 'huh' or 'what' might creep into my conversations too often…in theory that is.
Love, love the picture of the tea in the cup… the amber colors are gorgeous.
OK then, that's like it from me. 🙂

  2. IT IS WHAT IT IS! I love that t-shirt. Bought it from your store and I think that's my favorite line too! Ooooh la la, very nice photos…the lighting and all…

  3. I'am guilty of doing this and the two words…I seem to use for everything is NO DOUBT. I don't know why I say it but, I love it!! Hehe.

  4. There are so many of these, I hardly know where to start. My least favorites right now are "Like I said …" and "The thing of it is …." It's best if I don't think about it.

I was at Goodwill earlier today, and I bought two saucers that look eerily like your tea cup.

  5. Oh..yeah….I have a friend that says, You know? as a question..almost every sentence she says…drives me round the bend!

Your reality in your house with the sun pouring is looks pretty great to me! Hugs- Diana

  6. The reality is. . . I'd love to come and have a cup of tea with you with your beautiful tea cups.
When I leave you better keed your eye on the beautiful cobalte blue star as it just might fall into my pocket.

  7. I love this! What a great post…and one we can all relate to! If you ever notice anything missing when I leave…it'd probably be your little white puppy!! Ha!

  8. I'm sure I have several — I can't think of them right now – my best friend says "… or whatever" She gives an example of something like a favorite cookie "I love snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, or whatever"

  9. Ah, I love that light filtering in-you did a fantastic job of capturing that moment. It makes me envious, I want to sit at YOUR table, drinking tea, forgetting my worries.

If I stick true to MY nature, I would probably add a "you know what I mean?" onto the end of that previous paragraph! 🙂

  10. You had me laughing out loud by that last paragraph:) My father in law always used the phrase "to make a long story short" and I have to smile whenever I hear it or say it now…it is a pleasant memory. I wonder if my family thinks I have a phrase I repeat…if so I'm not aware of it:)

Anyways, to make this long story short I want to tell you I love the new header and the sunlight shining through your teacup….bliss.

  11. Such a great post, Karen. Love the photo's; beautiful.

My daughter says "alrighty then" while I say "it is what it is". lol

The one that bugs me when someone says "to tell you the truth". 🙂

  12. great post Karen…you typed what most of us think…one thing that bugs me is when someone makes an excuse by saying "life got in their way" Heck…LIFE is our way. Our motto around here, is that no matter what happens during the day…at the end of the day, we are together and still love each other

  13. My momma used to always say, "you know what I'm sayin'?" over and over and over until I just wanted to say, "YES! I'm right here listening!" Nervous tic yes?

I know I have my things I say, but damn! I can't think of one! lol

  14. Listen…….UGHHHHHHH!!!!! Listen is the phrase of choice for the big guy. As soon as I hear this I shut down. LOL! 🙂
And I have heard M say that, now I will goggle a bit when I hear it again! 🙂
