True Grit

What a fantastic movie!  Best I’ve seen in a long while…  You don’t even have to like westerns to enjoy the incredible acting, scenery, storyline and yes absolutely… TRUE GRIT in this movie.  Loved every single bit of it.  Except where the horse dies.  Dammit.

I want to be her when I grow up….

BadAss

Is it OK to curse on blogger?  I don’t know if it’s the New Yorker in me or the water I drank growing up… but I have been known to spew profanity if the occasion calls for it.  I know that’s not very ladylike, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Last night these guys put down the hammers and hoes (your mind’s in the gutter again, isn’t it?)..and took us girls out for a beautiful night ride through the hills of Durham for hotdogs at Guidas and Ice cream at Dairy Serve.

above photos courtesy google and whoever took them.

This is Jeff and his awesome wife, Patti. If you’ve been coming here for a while you will recognize him as This Old House’s restoration expert.

Life is Good.

That little thing Jeff is doing there, it’s a game between us all –
I’d tell ya about it, but then I’d have to kill you.

Lemonade, Anyone?

Today is the first day of the Bid, Barter, Bake & Bark sale held at the lovely Essex, CT home of Lorin G., Founder of Dog Days Adoption Events – at 101 N. Main Street.   I snuck over and took some pics… including a few of this adorable fellow who needs a home.  His story is a horror, notice he has no ears.  You’d never know it by his awesome disposition with kids, other dogs, and people in general.  How he managed to trust in humans after what he was put through as a pup attests to the true loving, loyal nature of the dog.
If you live near Essex, tomorrow is another day for the sale. Come have a cupcake, a glass of fresh squeeszed lemonade made by these lovely little ladies, browse the treasures and meet this handsome guy!

Is he a love, or what?….

For The Dogs

Hi All – I have posted before about the Dogs Days Shelter Dog Adoption Event we are going to hold in August.  Up until the event, we will be raising funds to cover the expenses of the weekend itself, such as food for volunteers, tent rental for shade for the dogs and rescue groups, porta potties, insurance fees, etc….

..and I had an idea.  So many of my blog friends are talented people who make stuff, and love dogs as much as I do!  I would love to host a fundraiser here on my blog containing items that YOU donate to the cause.  As in… if you are a weaver, perhaps you would be willing to donate a set of dish towels or a handbag or a small rug.  If you are a jewelry artist, maybe a pair of earrings or a necklace. Are you a potter? – a set of mugs or a pretty bowl.  Are you an antique collector? Maybe there is a piece you no longer have room or use for in your home.

I’ve never done this before, so here’s how I think it could work, but feel free to give me advice.  I design a post with a picture of each of the donated items and the “purchase price” to be determined by the crafter who donates the item.  BUYERS leave a comment stating they want to buy that item.  I contact buyer and “seller” and put you in contact with each other.  Buyer sends check written out to the Dog Days Adoption Event, mailed to me (I will provide mailing addresses upon request) and Seller (Donating crafter) ships item to Buyer.

So, what do you think?  Any interest? ….. bad idea?  I’m open to suggestions… See flyer below..

Show time

For a brief while years back my daughter and I ventured into the world of showing quarter horses.   While we met some wonderful people along the way and truly learned how to ride a horse with all those gazillion lessons, we weren’t really cut out for the upper levels of competition. Neither of us had the drive to do what you have to do to get there, it takes an awful lot of dedication, a competitive edge and money. Money helps. The more the better.

And so, the horses came home to be our pleasure horses. Trailriding, ring riding to tune up sometimes, and sometimes not., that’s their job nowadays.   They are awesome lawn ornaments too.

Today I went to the kind of horse show I really enjoy – A schooling show at Whitney Ridge Stables in Higganum, CT where my niece boards her horse, Dude.  The kids raised money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital in order to participate in the show.  All proceeds are donated to the hospital.  There are ribbons and trophies for everyone, and smiles abound.  Congrats to Whitney Ridge for putting on such a nice event for their kids and horses.

Just Breathe

Why do I feel guilty if I take moments like this
to just swing in the hammock under the trees on the hill
and marvel at the work accomplished
..to breathe in the beauty before me
..to just… be.
We only pass through once.
Don’t forget to breathe easy and enjoy the scenery….
