Everything but the Kitchen Sink

…. because there are dirty dishes in there that I’ve been ignoring all day.

Thank you all for the compliments on our kitchen – In our previous home the kitchen was too big and it felt  isolated from the rest of the house. This time around I wanted a more open feel, especially when we have company. This Old House lent itself perfectly to my ideal, mainly because in the old homes the kitchen, or “keeping room” was the main Hub of the house activites.  Our dining room, kitchen eating area and island work space are all one big area, the entire back of the main frame (the original box) of the house.

These are the chickens who reside in my kitchen sink window –
I’ve been contemplating building a coop out back for the real deal…
Feel free to tell me it’s a crazy idea….any time now!

These wingbacks were given to us by the previous owner of the house. They date back 100 years – and the upholstery was probably original.  The stuffing-cushioning were in pretty good shape, so I reupholstered them in this coral/cream/brown print and they look like new again. They don’t make things like they used to.

The two prints above the fireplace were my grandmothers.  They are floral prints from the Smithsonian, one in the month of August and one in November – my grandparents birth months.  Many years ago they  were hung on the wall over their headboard.

Our small kitchen table and breakfast nook – This area needs some decorating help. Haven’t gotten to that yet.

Dining table area –  this is a tiger maple set with black crackled chairs –
Haven’t figured out what I want to do with the windows yet…
KIM!!!!!  HELP!!!

I don’t know why there is fog to the right in this picture. A  previous tenant, perhaps?

  1. Karen-What a wonderful room(s). It looks lovely and you have done a great job with everything so far. I love your post and beam structure and your ceiling. It is a thing of pure beauty. Hugs-Diana

  2. When my timer frame grows up I hope it looks like yours. I love the openess of your kitchen and dining areas. Ours is rather smallish.
I noticed you have an oven in your fireplace. So cool! Have you used it? We too have a rumsford . . . still waiting for a blacksmith to make me a new screen. know any Blacksmiths? LOL

  3. Oh, so lovely!! Thanks for the Keeping Room tour!

When we lived in our last old home, built in 1879, every pic we took in the home always had a foggy spot. We also had a lot of very strange happenings. We just got used to it. Maybe you have a few extra "people" living with you!

  4. Karen, I want your kitchen. I just love the rustic charm of it and love that huge island with that gorgeous granite. I would do woven blinds on those windows like the ones in my great room and just a long panel on each side and maybe between each window. I think that would look sharp.

  5. Your home is just beautiful…everything I could want. Looking at the bare dining nook only exemplifies how cozy you have made the other rooms. I love the beams and the wood floors and those chairs do belong with the house!

Oh, I say go for it on the chickens!

    XO,
    Jane

  6. Your kitchen looks so inviting! I love the chickens, especially the yellow baby chicks! I like that you've brought special things into the space to remember your family, too! What's for dinner? ♥♥♥

  7. I have a definite case of kitchen envy right now!…Truth be told though I don't have need of such a large kitchen these days and we are thinking of downsizing from our kitchen which is probably half the size of yours…But it will always remain the heart of the home!

  8. Karen- you kitchen is beautiful! love the ceiling with the beams, love the pendants over the island, love the stone on the island and the coral in your wingbacks and those dining chairs are works of art… love it all!!

    beautiful, beautiful room!

  9. Hi Karen,

Your pictures of the kitchen area, do it justice. This spot in your home is one of it's best features, warm and inviting…..In regards to the live chickens, as a person who lives right next to a neighbor who has them….I don't mind the chickens, but I HATE the roosters..They wake up every morning at 4:45 am and make noise ALL day!!!! A real pain….I would ask you, for your own families sake and your neighbors, don't keep any roosters, or get them to begin with…..I'm told that you don't need roosters to have the chickens lay eggs…..just some thoughts from a friend.

  10. What a lovely home you have. We have some early American antiques, so your taste is very similar to ours. How lucky the previous owners left those gorgeous chairs.

The chickens look so French. They're adorable.

  11. In love with your style and furnishings, so warm and inviting, Home Sweet Home! I just received the huge package of Roba Dolce and cannot wait to try out the delicious flavors! What a treat on this cold bleak day, will blog about it soon!

  12. Absolutely stunning!

Hunter looking at your photo's – "Oh my gosh, that is so beautiful. I need to buy that house." 🙂

  13. I think the "fog" is the Deacon, just keeping an eye on everything you're doing. I'm sure he approves and I know I LOVE it! What a gorgeous place to call home.

My friend Michelle of The Paris House Blog lives in a farmhouse that is over 200 years old. You two have very different decorating styles, but you both share a love of your homes and family.

As for the chickens, go for it. I had chickens when I lived in California and there's nothing like fresh eggs. I didn't have roosters, my neighbors would have killed me, but they sure did love to come for breakfast, lol.

    Beautiful, just beautiful.

  14. Beauty kitchen! My dining room is my next project. We have been eating in there while waiting for my new kitchen table, which finally arrived yesterday! Today, I will get the dining room back to order and then plan what I am going to do with it.

Chickens, yes, yes, yes. How fun. I would love it.

  15. Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous!! We are building (almost done, YAY) and I have cream glazed cabinets and a black island so my heart skipped a beat when I saw yours! Gorgeous! 🙂

  16. This area is gorgeous, a perfect modern day improvement to the small room/space living of the olden days. LOVE an open floor plan. I would DIE for the ceiling beams… couldn't do that when we renovated. Ceilings were too low.
I also love the half wall divider that defines the kitchen and dining areas. Perfect.
    Love it all.
