Fanning it

  Well, it’s hotter than hot once again, with temps near 100 and the humidity thick enough to slice. Yuck.  It’s important in this kind of weather to remember the animals in our care.  I get the barn, coop and garden chores done as early as I can talk myself into on these hot summer days.

Chickens do not like extreme heat.
They do better in cold weather temps than they do
in high heat situations.
I can’t air condition their coop,
but I do make sure they have plenty of clean water and I dump ice cubes in
the water troughs during the day.  I also make sure the coop is clean and there is
a small fan facing into their yard to give them some breeze relief.
(pardon the algae… ahem)
Chickens don’t sweat… if they are heat stressed you
will see them with beak open, panting.
I also let the girls out into the yard where they take shelter in the grove of cedar trees
next to their coop…relatively  safe from predators and cool in the shade.
Up at the barn, we’ve just installed paddle fans over the stalls ,
high enough that the horses won’t clip themselves on the blades.
In extreme heat and humidity, to keep the air flowing and
the hay from molding, I also turn on a window fan for cross ventilation.
(pardon the cobwebs! Sheesh!)
The horses come and go from the barn to the pasture all day long.
When the bugs and heat drive them nuts, they come in for respite.

When you see horses out in pasture on a hot day where there is no protection like shade trees or a barn
 from the sun and the bugs,  oh.. they’ll survive, but they aren’t very uncomfortable.
My dogs go out to do their thing and come right back in, it’s just too darn hot.
I hate when I see dogs chained out in the heat with dirty water to top it off
– they are also plagued by bugs
and can die from heat stroke.
We would be miserable in those conditions,
so are the dogs.
I saw a situation that made me want to spit in the persons face recently.
Sometimes I don’t bother putting a sock in it and
I stand up for the animal being abused.
They can’t speak for themselves.
Here at This Old House, the animals are spoiled.
I know how lucky I am to have the resources to do so.
But it doesn’t take much to be kind to an animal.  Not much at all.
If you make the decision to own  them, treat them right..
or let someone else give them the home they deserve.
– just sayin.

Overcast perfection

  I took Ruby and my good camera out for a paddle yesterday morning
on the Menunketesuck River in Clinton, Ct.
The weather was overcast and the air was still…
a perfect combination  for glass-like photography.
I love this photo.. may try to paint it.

A juvenille Osprey
The Menunketesuck flows out into Long Island sound, so there are seagulls….
…blue crabs…
and hundreds of thousands of fiddler crabs,
shy for the camera.
Do you see them?
I could live here happily, I think…
…or here. This place just needs a little love.
 If you haven’t given kayaking a try yet,
I highly recommend it. Great exercise at your own pace,
and you’ll get a view of your neck o’s the woods and waterways
that you would otherwise never see.
It’s a beautiful thing.

His & Hers

These are our kayaks…
Since my guy took so well to the water in our big blue clunker of a sea kayak last year,
this year Santa left him a brand spanking new one,
a much sleeker design that he will just glide through that water in,
like the dew sliiiiiding off a cooool mint leaf…

(who can tell me where that line is from… )
Anyway… notice one of these things is not like the other?
His is still wrapped in it’s Placenta, hasn’t even been birthed yet.
*sigh*
So, here’s hoping the heat settles down and the thunder and lightening storms go away
and with a little luck we might throw these babies in the back of the truck
and see how she floats.
 I had originally ordered him a metallic blue version.
My thinking was that it was a manly color. Sorta like a sporty little car.
He wasn’t having any of it… wanted to be as visible as possible just in case
“I want FLAMING MANGO ORANGE!”
Ok then.

Imagine that!

 I just changed browsers, and the problem is fixed.  Using Google Chrome for this post, no issues. So, the issue is with Internet Explorer/Blogger.

 Thank you all for participating in my conversation the other day regarding current events.  I enjoy these posts because while it may seem I’m just a tad opinionated (ahem) …I also appreciate another’s perspective and sometimes with that new perspective I see things a little differently. This is what I wish the whole world would do….  Create meaningful dialogue with an open mind.   I like to think I’m a tolerant person of the  unbiased non-judgemental sort.  Sometimes that’s not entirely true and I don’t mind being called on it, because it’s not where I want to be.

    About my dollhouse project… well, it’s at a standstill. I’ve gotten the interior work done on the floors and walls, etc… and there are some furnishings complete, but still no living room or bedroom. I’m thinking my Christmas List will contain those very things this year. With all the other bills we have, somehow purchasing this stuff for no-one-will-ever-live-there-ever…. just doesn’t feel right.  However,  I can covet a few things on etsy… see below.

You can see how one could get totally engrossed..
…and possibly broke… 🙂
It’s been hot, HUMID, and now rainy here at This Old House.
I’ve been doing some decluttering –  always feels good to do so…
and came across this photo of my girl
when she was about 7 years old.
This was her first horse show, her first trail class.
Our horse at that time was a wing-nut , and would not calm down
at the fairgrounds. A good friend and neighbor, also riding in the show,
let us “borrow” her mare, Lucky Maggie.
Maggie was a golden girl, in looks and temperament, as you can see.
As for that show shirt?  What was her mama thinking???
Oh.. that would be me.
Have a good day, all –

Blogger sucks

Still no resolution on the inability to compose a post. This is being done in HTML mode, which is also wonky. Have you noticed there’s no real way to contact Blogger/Google to report trouble? Because Blogger is free, I guess they have the right to be unapproachable. Their Blogger buzz and reported issues site is outdated, probably no longer in use. Their troubleshooting areas don’t list this ISSUE.

It is what it is.

Come, sit, pour a cup of coffee and lets talk current events…

If you visit blogs for sunshine and light, it’s not happening here today. Some of you have asked me what I think of the P*ula Deen fiasco. I don’t think I’m going to make any friends here when I say I think she is getting what she deserves. It’s not that she’s a terrible person, but I have no tolerance for prejudice and racism, not even in stupid callous jokes. She’s known among her colleagues for this. It’s not funny. Ever. Abuse of employees in this manner is never right… and one of her ideas – the hiring of all black men to serve at a dinner party representing a by-gone era she cherishes is kinda disgusting. There is nothing to celebrate about the way black people were treated back-in-the-day. Nostalgic? Hell no. I know she’s sorry now, because she was called on it and is now embarassed. She should be. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That being said… Paula is just a tip on that iceburg. There are many rappers out there who call each other the “N” word. I will never understand this. Here’s something else entirely – why are there magazines such as “Ebony” and events such as “The National Black Writers Conference”, among many other examples? Somehow I don’t think there is a “Snow” magazine in publication and I doubt you’ll find “The National White Writers Conference” in session anywhere. No, I’m pretty sure those would be called… racist. So why keep separating blacks and whites in this manner? And there’s the religious aspect of all of this…We’re all created equally,and if you’re a God believing person, surely you hold this to be true… all his people were created equally, right? He loves all? Yet some of the most religious people I’ve met are also.. prejudice. How do they justify this in their own head, I ask you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The barbaric acts we are seeing in the news are just mind blowing, sometimes literally! How about that Brazilian Referee who was attacked by a player, pulled out his knife in defense, I guess, and killed the player right there on the field! Then, the angry mob came out on the field and beheaded and dismembered the referee!! If you’re so inclined, you can see those graphic photos on the internet. What are they doing there, I ask you. Does the media ever think of the torture that must be to the families of the victims? And why do WE need to see it at all?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have you been privy to the mess that is the Osc*r Pistor*us investigation? This is what Bill Maher had to say recently… “I wouldn’t shoot her thru the bathroom door” is the new “I wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating crackers” Funny, but not. Oscar claims he mistakenly shot and killed his girlfriend, who was in the tiny little toilet area of his bathroom which had it’s own door, closed, at the time he shot her. Apparently, he thought she was an intruder. He claims he felt vulnerable in his gated, security camera’d and alarmed home because he did not have his “legs” on. This turns out not to be true according to the evidence, which shows the shooter was standing at a mans normal height judging by the angle of the bullets and how they hit and killed his girlfriend. He shot her several times, all fatal blows… did he not hear her cry out after the first shot? Why would an intruder lock him/herself in a three by three ft. toilet? Did he not look beside him in the bed to see if his girlfriend was there in the bathroom before he jumped up and assumed there was an intruder? She lived there part time, after all. The kicker is… Oscar is free to leave the country and pursue his athletic career while the court system figures all this out. Something smells funny.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Speaking of athletes behaving badly… what a fool a certain football player is for behaving as if he is God and taking the lives of others whenever it suits him. Do you know why he had such a high opinion of himself? Because we pay these guys millions upon millions of dollars, an insane amount really… just because they’re really good with a ball. I can see a million a year if you’re so unbelievably good (and lucky to have that talent) at any given sport. But the salaries they pull are insanity. The NFL is not the only culprit. We treat them like they are Gods, we worship them, throw insane amounts of money at them… so why would we expect them to believe any lesser truth? Our educators, our law enforcement and rescue people, our physicians (well, some) and our farmers, all valuable and necessary and vital people in our communities, are underpaid. Our politicians and athletes are phenomenally overpaid. What’s wrong with this picture.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Zimmerm*an vs. Martin… a sad and tragic case. A young man killed, another’s life most likely ruined by the ensuing mess. This one is tricky. Was Zimmerman attacked in a life threatening manner? Was Martin an innocent just walking through a neighborhood? I don’t know. In general, if a kid of any color is just walking through a neighborhood -not doing anything wrong- , odds are he’s not gonna be shot point blank in the chest. No, there had to be some sort of provocation. However, was it the kind that deserved a bullet to the chest? Was this a hasty move by an overzealous neighborhood watchman? … Sad all around. The truth will never be known with absolute certainty.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Are we becoming a more barbaric society? Or is the media just giving us all the information we weren’t privy to before the internet and instant news gratification? I think the media is going to be our fall from grace in the end. It WILL be our end. There’s my spin, and it’s perfectly OK if you feel differently. I welcome all opinions, as long as you show respect for others opinions.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PS.. BLogger is being a real bugger today, posting is almost impossible, so I apologize for the poor format. I hope to correct it once blogger straightens up and flies right. (sigh)
UPDATE! Blogger is still wonky…and I find reading a post with poor format is just annoying, so until blogger straightens this out, I’m taking a blog hiatus. As always, thanks for your comments, I enjoy the conversation.
Mark amazes me, he contributes to my requests often, even sent in  a book for our Little Free Library..and this guy’s job takes him away from home more often than not.  He’s on a boat right now.
Not much of a cook, and since I’m not home, can’t tap into my wife’s treasure trove of recipes, but here’s mine.
 Ha ha, Mark –
My favorite summer keep-in-the-fridge or take-to-a-summer-potluck recipe is Southern Living’s Honey Chicken Salad
http://www.southernliving.com/food/kitchen-assistant/easy-chicken-salad-recipes-00417000067757/page13.html
Most of the time I cheat and use a rotisserie chicken, so there’s no cooking at all.
(not my photo)
This one is from my own files.. I shared it here on the blog before, but it’s worth repeating 🙂
Dawn, this one’s from you.
http://thisoldhousetoo.blogspot.com/2010/07/watermelon-sangria.html
Sally of Whispering Hope is sharing this recipe..
“I’d almost forgotten how much we like macaroni & pea salad in the summertime. Oh, and also you can add tuna – I use  albacore, so much better to me.”
1 (15 ounce) can green peas
4 hard-boiled eggs
1/4 diced onion
1 -2 tablespoon dill relish
8 ounces cooked macaroni
3/4 cup salad dressing or 3/4 cup mayonnaise, to taste
salt and pepper to taste
..and here’s one from Maggy down in North Carolina, where she reports it is sweltering!
Cucumbers & Onions In Sour Cream Sauce .. Best Cucumber Recipe Ever!
1/2 cup sour cream
1 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp vinegar
1/2 tsp salt
2 medium cucumbers, thinly sliced
1 to 2 small onions, thinly sliced
OPTIONAL:
— Sweet green peas
— Diced celery
— Mayo? I seem to remember that I always added a hint of mayonnaise to this recipe (Duke’s Mayo, always)
Combine sour cream, sugar, vinegar and salt; add cucumber and onion slices and stir gently. Cover and chill 24 hours, stirring occasionally. Yields 4 servings.
PS – If you have very watery cucumbers, let them ‘sweat’ and release some (or most) of their juices before adding them to the other ingredients. Otherwise, you’ll have a very watered down sauce, and it will undermine the taste of the cucumbers and the other ingredients.
At 7:45 A.M. and 80 degrees already I have completed the outside barn and coop
chores and I might just give some of your recipes a whirl today.
Thank you so much for sharing…
The Cucumber dilemna and a request for your participation.
It’s hotter than hades in Southern New England..
all farm chores like mucking of stalls and raking out of henhouse
and tending the garden are done very early in the day.
I’ve got a fan blowing in the horses stalls
and a small one at the hen house.
I also brought some watermelon to the girls just a few minutes ago.
Very important to consider your animals,
house pets included, when the heat rises.
As the garden is a-growing,
we’ve got a proliferation of cucumbers.
So many, I don’t know what the heck we’re gonna do with them.
Family and friends will get some, ofcourse,
and if we ever decide to put Buck the Wagon back in business
out front, they’ll have a place to go.
But for now…
out the ears, I’m telling ya.
I don’t mind spending some time in the kitchen on hot days like this,
thank you the- powers- that- be for the  invention of air conditioning.
I googled “simple easy quick pickles”… I kid you not..
and a recipe by Rachael Ray popped up.
Just made ’em… and they are really easy, and really good.
No canning experience necessary…took about 15 minutes.
Just slice them, put together brine ingredients and cook in a pot,
pour hot brine  over the cucumber slices, let cool and then chill.
Recipe HERE.
Another great recipe I tried and loved has been going around on Facebook.
It’s a Cucumber Salsa, and oh, man is it refreshing and delicious.
(I left out the cilantro – bleh.)
I recommend eating it with tortilla chips or topping off a great burger.
YUM!
Recipe HERE.
Both recipes are great foods for a hot summer day.
Now I’m making a request.
 Send me a link to one of your favorite summer recipes.
It can be a link to one of your own blog posts of a recipe.
Or a link like the ones I attached above, most can be found online…
Or, you can type out the recipe and send it that way.
Let’s see what kind of summer recipe blog post we can put together.
If you have a photo to include… that’s even better.
100 Dogs – 100 new chances at life
Saturday and Sunday were hot and humid,
but that didn’t stop some 80 volunteers from putting on an
Adoption Event that resulted in 100 shelter dogs and puppies
finding their forever homes.
Each day, the event is open from 11am-4pm.
Ten hours total,  out of 135 dogs, 100 homes secured.
Simply amazing.
The remaining unadopted dogs went into foster and are free from kill shelters forever.
You would not believe the mayhem that fills those hours.
The meeting, the greeting, the reference checks, the vet reference checks,
the interviews, the adoption paperwork.
100 Dogs.
100 Adopters.
10 hours.
Founder Lorin on the right rallying the troops
next to the owner of Bishops Orchard in Guilford, who was kind enough to let Dog Days use their
awesome farm facility.
As you can see… it takes a village.
In all the land you will not find a more dedicated group of volunteers
than the folks who come out for Dog Days.
My son on the left with some of his friends.
Don’t underestimate the teens of today…..these guys worked for 30 hours in total
setting up and taking down kennels, tents, banners, trash removal, car parking, hay bale moving,
etc. etc. etc… it was dirty work, and they stepped up to do it.
Such a great thing to see, so many young people getting involved
for nothing more than the love of the dog and helping less fortunate creatures.
And pizza . There is always pizza.
The Rangers and Scouts are an amazing crew…Adults and teens caring for the dogs
and helping families connect with them and choose the right fit.
This awesome group dedicated their weekend to the health and well being of
the shelter dogs and their new families.
Once the event is set up and all dogs have arrived with their rescues,
checked by the vet, bathed and given a day to settle in,
 The flood gates open at 11am on Saturday
and the forming of new families begins.
The interview to make sure the home an adopter wants to provide
is a good match for the dog.
Lorin Greene, look what you’ve done.
You Go Girl.
Dog Days is already fundraising for the next event,
to be held in Norwich in September.
If you’d like to volunteer some of your time or can make a monetary donation
of any amount, –  even $5.00 goes a LONG WAY! …
