Have you Googled your piece of Earth lately?

I did… and I gotta tell ya ….it disturbs me just a little that anyone can type your address in and virtually drive down your road and park in front of your house.   I was even able to pull in my driveway a little.  Yeah.. disturbing.

However,  Google Earth has not yet updated our “street face”.   This is a really cool shot of the house in 2008, before we owned it and took over the renovation. You can see that the house was 40 feet closer to the road originally -notice the power lines at the road.  There was alot of overgrowth surrounding the house. The previous owner took down some beautiful trees before we were able to acquire it, broke my heart to see it happen…and If I had my druthers, we would have kept some of that overgrowth, including a big tree that was right next to the house.  Because of the extensive work we had to do, alot of that had to be removed.  I will probably spend the rest of our years here replenishing the “green”.

This is the face I fell in love with long ago….

The arial view is an updated version.
We’re not really all that far out in the sticks…

  1. Yes, I've done that and I'm not at all comfortable with the invasion of privacy. Yet I'm torn because I once used it to find my way to a coaching job. I needed to see the landmarks and Google Earth helped out a lot. What to do? Nothing, I guess, because we apparently have no say in the matter.

  2. Scary, isn't it? Our old house isn't in the 'street view' yet. I guess we're just *too* rural? But, I did google my workplace and was able to zoom right in on my car on the parking lot. Wow. I really have mixed feelings about all of this! Your home is gorgeous, btw. I must look around here a little better sometime so I can take the 'tour'! -Tammy

  3. I'm just thankful that the majority of people out there have their head screwed on tight . . . for the most part anyway!

My word, you had a vision! Your home looks stunning. We had to cut down 4 huge trees on our property when we purchased it. I had mixed emotions about two of them, but for some reason they were "ant highways" it was gross, they had to go!

  4. Not only can I see my house in every view possible but I can see my car parked in the driveway! I can also see how big the junkyard across the street has grown:( I understand that Dick Cheney's house cannot be seen on Google Earth so there is a way to get around it if you know the right people:)

  5. Yes, I have googled my house a few times and the details on a little unnerving. It even shows our car in the driveway. lol
Your garden is going to be wonderful when all the veggies come in.
Love those shoes you got for around the property!

  6. I've never googled mine, but a blog friend in the Netherlands tried & tried until he finally found it and emailed to me. My word, mine looks like a postage stamp (which it is btw) surrounded by other postage stamps.

I didn't know you could google earth just with someone's name. (reading Oliag's comment)

  7. My mom freaked out when I showed her their home!
Our property just shows up as "mountain range" !
Have you done the Google street walking thing? That is awesome! I was able to walk down my childhood street! Wow….

So happy Opie is shedding out 🙂
For some reason we are having a prob with Allure this year. I even had her tested for cushings 2 weeks because of such an overgrowth of hair. It came back neg. Poor girl is just covered in winter hair that does not want to leave! I curry her 3 times a day, and finally made a little progress over the last few days!
Are you still thinking of bringing Opie home? He will luv the chicks 🙂

  8. It is creepy the info we have at our finger tips, until, that is, it comes in handy. lol
    Lovin the before shot.

  9. It scares the crap outta me! I'm not comfortable with the internet in the first place and that's just one of the reasons.

Dunkin Donuts, huh? That surprises me. I'd gain weight just smelling the aroma in the breeze.

  10. Do you know our closest Dunkin Donuts is a 2 hour drive? Seriously!!! I love the old girl before and I love her now. Google is kinda scary-someone looked me up that I did not want them to see my house-ugh!

  11. There is no 'street view' of our house thank goodness… we are too' boonified' I guess.

  12. I'm totally creeped and amazed at Google Earth myself. I swear you can see my hubbins in the front window as he likes to survey the acreage (all 1/2 of it).

I pray he has clothes on.

  13. What a difference from old to new!
Last time Google was driving down our street, we were still building and didn't have an address yet. So, if you pull up our address the street view is of the old ranch house on the corner taken on the one day that they had a huge yard sale. It looks like a junk yard! Thanks Google Earth.

  14. i haven't googled, and I probably should. I too love the green in the first photo, but yes, It would be a fun project to add it back in over time. The house looks amazing regardless.

  15. It's funny that I can tell you the exact date that the google earth picture was taken of our house. I had just finished digging for our pond and hadn't put the black plastic liner in yet and here it was on google earth. 🙂 But I do think it's kind of creepy that others can see our houses in an "up close and personal way"!

I love, love, love what you've done to your house. OMG it's gorgeous!

    Have a great day.
    Pam
p.s. if Dunkin' Donuts was that close to me, I'd be in very big trouble…. 🙂

  16. I like Google Earth, Google maps (street view) and all the other cool map systems. You can use these tools to virtual tours of far off lands and places, that you might not other wise see, without enlisting in the Navy or spending millions in travel. I love This Old House and the wonderful people who live there.

  17. Yeah, it's scary. I zoomed in and could even see our garbage cans.

Wow, you certainly are a visionary! The house was great, but you've made it fabulous!
