My Other Self

…Wears this kind of jewelry…

 and these kind of boots…
And carries this purse… only when absolutely necessary….

My Other Self lives in this cottage with her (same!) family….
and looks like this in her skinny jeans….

and does this…
..for them…
and makes good money at it ,too….
Enough, even,  to give these two a better life…
…and so many more.
My Other Self has these two constant companions…
Australian Cattle dogs named Axel and Rose….

and looks out over this with morning coffee when she’s not
on a shoot for Nat Geo ….

and drives this, most often with the roof off…

and soaks here at the end of a long day.

What does YOUR Other Self look like?
I challenge you to do a similar post
Send me your blogpost link and I’ll put it under the hot tub here….

William & Kate

I’m not a “royal watcher” by any means, but you can’t help notice what’s happening on the other side of the pond, it’s all over the news… constantly.   Like many others, I ‘ve certainly grown weary of the constant media barrage regarding the upcoming royal wedding.  There’s an awful lot of serious things happening around the world right now, this is just a wedding after all.  Throw in all the catty gossip and overly publicized scandals to the Royal Family over the years, and it casts a tacky shadow.  Some say the monarchy is outdated.

So now I’ll admit to you that I happen to like most of the royals and there’s something to be said for upholding centuries old traditions, maintaining rituals, dignity and grace in the face of all that crap.  It’s easy to forget that they are also very real people trying to live and thrive in a surreal world. The expectations are almost impossible.

I love William and Kate as a couple – looks to me like a genuine happiness when they are in each others company and I feel a weird sense of resurrection and renewal for the royal family.  I do believe these two are going to bring a lot of good to the world.

The ceremony was beautiful, the gown was perfect
What a beautiful bride….
talk about grace under pressure!
I was amazed at the sea of hats on just about every woman…
I’m sure the hatmakers of England can now retire.
..and these two?
Beatrice and Eugenie  …well.. no words needed, really.
OK, one word.
Really
What I would have given to be riding one of those magnificent horses
in the procession through the streets.
I admired their composure in the midst of the cheering crowds.
If you know horses, no easy feat!
Summing it up, I’m a sucker for a good love story,
and for beauty and inspiration
in a time when we need all we can get.
I was surprised to find myself crying as I watched this piece of history
unfolding across the pond.
A mix of joy, hope…
and sadness.

For the Dogs!!

We have just gotten the go ahead to host a dog adoption event through
the non profit organization Dog Days Adoption Events
on the last weekend of August  ( 27th-28th)
 at Parmelee Farm!!

SO….this announcement is for any local or not-so-far-away folks who might read my blog…. If you are interested in adopting a dog or puppy, please come visit  Parmelee Farm and the dogs available for adoption on the 27th and 28th…

OR if you have any interest in volunteering in the million different roles that are available on that weekend, please send me an e-mail at karenthisoldhouse@hotmail.com

  (Liz J., Beth Y., Carol F.,  Lynn R, Helene F, ……you know I’m talking to YOU)

Words from their website….

“DOG DAYS is a non-profit, mobile “pop up” shelter dog adoption event in Connecticut. Our event philosophy is based on the premise “it takes a village to rescue a dog” and we rely on the community volunteers, merchants and civic organizations from the town that “hosts” our event, to take part in the adoption weekend.
Each event will have 80 dogs for adoption, 40 large breed dogs and 40 small breeds and puppies. They will all have been seen by a vet, current on all shots and spayed or neutered. Rescues from around the state of Connecticut are invited and beyond if we can’t find enough dogs to fill the event. Training demonstrations as well as grooming information, diet, veterinary care and more are at every event to help a new adopter take care of their new best friend. “

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to help out with this event…
Lord help me  find the strength to not bring home another dog
lest I want a divorce immediately thereafter.
I suppose that will depend on the day.
More to come….

Misery Loves Company

So I have been sick for the past two days-

  – coughing.and.sneezing.and.achy muscles.sorethroat.sleepless.and.generally.miserable and last night I had to leave a meeting because the wave of coughs and sneezing were about to drown everyone in the room so I did the only thing acceptable and left almost rudely right in the middle of someone’s speech.   Not cool.   Tonight my son is making his confirmation and I don’t think I can shut it long enough to sit through the ceremony.  Not cool at all

But you know… I’m not really complaining, because it’s just a stupid cold and there are worse things in life, don’t we all know it.

So, in light of the fact that I might be up for the third night in a row at 3am reading your blogs… I’m putting something fun in this post that will help you to help entertain ME when you’re sleeping and I’m probably not.   ( I’m not complaining tho, really! )

I saw this idea on another blog and although his was more challenging (he’s got a macro lens, I don’t yet)… here’s my version.   See if you can guess correctly what all of the items below are…

and PS>>>>  do not click on the pictures to make them bigger… a reader informed me that I (stupidly!) titled the pictures by what they were and you will see that if you click. SO.. no cheating.

Answering Questions on Comments

I love your comments, and sometimes I’d love to reply or thank you for your kind words or, in particular, answer a question.  Someone wants to know where I found my garden mouse tealight holders on the mantle… I got them at a hardware store, but they are also available online here…

http://www.kitchenkaboodle.com/product_detail2.php?sku=470269%21890&multi=0

I would have answered directly, but when I tried, I got the no-reply comment blogger response from blogger.  SO.. for all of you who occasionally comment and don’t mind a back-and-forth banter, please un-hide your e-mail address so we can chat or I can thank you or answer your questions, etc.

Here’s how you do that…

You can set up your profile to allow people to click “reply” and respond via email back to you. If you’d like to change your settings, then here’s how to do it:

1. Go to your Blogger Dashboard and click on Edit Profile.

2. When the window pops up, make sure and click the box “show my email address.”
3. Enter your email address.
4. Then make sure to click SAVE PROFILE at the bottom of the page.

Living on the Skin

Vicky of The Westra World posted a quote on her blog today.
I placed it on one of my photos here…
and I will tack it up on my bulletin board too.
(maybe a tattoo on the forehead?.. as a reminder)

Here is why it’s particularly poignant coming from Vicky –
She’s just been slammed with a diagnosis that would knock anyone to their knees.
This courageous mother of two young  boys is so gracious, with an open heart.
I am amazed at her strength, her resolve,
her gratitude despite the battle ahead of her.
She’s on a mission, and I see someone who’s got what it takes to win.
Fight like a girl, Vicky-
