How does she sleep at night?

I’ve been a fan of true crime authors, true crime documentaries and movies since I was a young teen.  Between that and Vampires, you’d think I might be a pretty dark personality, but I hope you already know that not to be true.     My husband often questions my choice of reading material.  “How can you read that crap? It’s  morbid! THAT is why you’re a nervous wreck“.  The reason is simple.. the process of solving these crimes is fascinating, as is the psychotic mentality of the people who commit them.  I’m not alone in this, it’s why the nation was riveted when OJ or whoever killed Nicole and Ron.  You know who I’m talking about, don’t ya.

Right now we’re bombarded with the Jodi Ar*as trial.  If you’ve been living under a rock you might not be familiar with the case of the on again off again girlfriend of Travis Al*xander, who not only shot him in the head,  she slashed his throat, almost decapitating him, and stabbed him another 27 or so times.  Her story has changed atleast twice.  (1. I wasn’t there!   2.  There were masked intruders!   3. I did it out of self defense!)       Self defense? … he was naked in the shower and she was taking nude pictures of him, minutes, maybe even seconds  before she killed him.     Jodi tries to throw everyone around her under the bus during the trial… Travis was a pedophile, he was abusive…. there is no evidence in his entire life or computer history to hold this up.  There is much hard evidence to prove otherwise between the defendant and her victim.  Texts, e-mails, photos, accounts by others in their presence. There were never indications of abuse. There WERE indications of her obsession with him.        My parents abused me since I was 7 years old… my mother kept a wooden spoon in her purse!    Good Lord, girl, are you serious??…   There is also no evidence to support those accusations, but getting hit with a wooden spoon would not compel most people to murder in such a violent way.      She blames the Prosecutor in this case for her memory loss issues when it pertains to crucial moments of the killing.  She remembers shooting Travis, but nothing about the stabbing.         It’s because  you  keep badgering me (speaking to the prosecutor when he asked her if she knew when her memory lapses were going to occur) , thats when I have  memory issues… when men badger me, like you and Travis.       Ok then.

Watching her on the stand is nauseating… there is a smugness, there is a feigned helplessness, a -poor me- performance that I have a hard time witnessing.  There are too many  “I don’t remember’s…

What I hope… what I truly hope is this…. this will not be another Casey Anthony story.  Please, no.

Who’s the real Jodi?  We’ll never know for sure…clearly, she’s not telling.

Blue Moon

One of my favorite shoreline stores is Blue Moon Gallery in Guilford, CT.  I doubt there is a soul on this planet with an artistic or spiritual or humorous bent that couldn’t find 100 things to love in that shop.  The Mr. gave me a gift certificate for Christmas and today I spent it.   Here are some of my new treasures…

SERIOUSLY!!!…..
This is a Raku guardian angel, no bigger than your thumb.
You tell her your worries and fears and she works them for you,
while you leave them with her and go live your life joyously and pursue your goals..
I have no one to give this card to at this very moment…
however I couldn’t pass it up.

This and That

We’re still snow covered, but it’s all just part of the scenery now.
Had a few more inches the other night, just enough  to pretty up the dirty snow.
That’s do-able.
The middle hay field…
Right here is where I stand on a warm summers day
to catch the occasional ocean breezes, which come from the right of this picture…
or the smell of fresh cut hay when it’s harvest time.
Two of my favorite scents – if only they could be bottled.

The girls are not fond of the snow,
puts a damper on their free roaming ways…
but they’re still laying eggs, thanks to the red flood lamp I have in their coop.
Hens like a certain amount of daylight for laying.
Keeping them warm helps too.
My chickens eat very well too – they get their normal balanced feed,
and also table scraps – like pasta (they LOVE spaghetti) and oatmeal
and yogurt, cottage cheese, grapes, strawberries,
and whatever else is starting to wilt in the refrigerator.

A few simple changes have made our bedroom
alittle less wintry.. I needed some LIGHTNESS..
I don’t ordinarily decorate with blue accents..
but this hue, almost a robins egg, was calling to me.
Scratches and chips add to the charm, don’t you think?
Just a glance in her direction, and the tail begins to wag…always.
On my nightstand –  The Thirteenth Tale – a great read – thanks Kate.
I did try those two recipes in the previous post…
they are awesome!  Give them a try if you’re looking for something healthy and delicious.
It’s a new day, people.  Make it a good one.

Ritzy Rolos & Horrible dresses

Simply place ritz crackers on a cookie sheet, and top each one with a Rolo candy. Place in an oven at 350º. Remove when Rolos are melted and top with a second Ritz. Let cool to harden, and eat them by the handfuls.

 – Sinful, but so easy good.
——————————————————————————————————-

I don’t watch alot of TV,  and not often awards shows.
Last night I did catch some of the Grammys…
and I found some of the dresses pretty awful.
Surprising.. because these people have the money and the “staff”
to get this right.  Maybe I’m too stuffy.
I love Adele!
This is just awful…as if Mary Poppins threw it up like a hairball.
That topknot would give anyone a headache, I give Jennifer credit.
The dress?…Just weird.
Reminds me of those flashdance sweatshirts with one shoulder cut out
that we used to wear in HS..
The 20 something year age difference? … well, she looks stellar for her age,
but girlfriend, that’s gonna be real tough pretty soon, just ask Demi Moore.
Miranda…
Who told her she looks fabulous in this dress, I want to know….
She’s beautiful, she had a gorgeous figure flattering black gown on
just an hour before… but she’s not a small girl…
THIS.. just threw her under the bus.
Shame on her people.
Kimbras dress… I loved it and I hated it.
THe little mermaid meets tinkerbell?
And she had a hard time walking in it…
But it was also beautiful in an ethereal way.
Her genuine joy in winning the award was evident,
always nice to see.
So what do you think?
Love em or hate em?
It’s all good –

Randomocity

Because truly, that’s what I do best.  Is that a word?  I’m not sure.. but you know what I’m referring to.  So here goes…  (I might have had some high octane chocolate a few minutes ago.. just hush)

I’m plagerizing today by posting a healthy gluten-free pancake recipe my fitness friend Joey put on FB .. if she says it’s good, it’s probably good because she’s picky.  Let’s see if she’s paying attention….

Joey’s pancake recipe:

½ cup almond flour
… ½ tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. baking powder
½ cup egg whites
1 egg

Combine almond flour, cinnamon, and baking powder in a medium sized bowl. Mix in egg whites and egg.

Heat a non-stick sauté pan over a medium heat and melt 1 tsp. of coconut oil. Pour ¼-cup pancake mix into the pan (do this for as many pancakes fit in the pan without over crowding). Once you see the edges begin to bubble, flip the pancake and cook another 40 seconds or so. Remove from the pan and continue this process until you have finished all the batter.

Pancakes make 2 servings (each serving is about 4-5 pancakes).

This cartoon  below is hilarious…. because some of us horse people go just a little nutz with all the blanketing of horses we do during cold weather months. Truth be told, if horses are left to their own devices, they grow a decent coat and as long as they have plenty of food, good body weight and shelter to get out of the bad weather, they don’t really need blankets.   I blanket Opie because he was bred to be a show horse and has never grown a really thick coat.  So to make me feel better, he has a winter blanket.   Our show horse Max is blanketed because he also doesn’t grow a thick coat, and we don’t WANT him to because he is worked almost daily and the sweating and drying would be a real nuisance and not good for him if he had thick winter coat hair.

(pulled this off FB on iphone, pardon the weird graphics… )

Look at this guy sporting a tartan hood.

We’re about to get some crumby winter weather again… more snow, sleet, freezing rain,  general yuck.  So while the sun was shining today I took Ben out for the exercise we both need.

His mom was cold.

Rainbow

Last night we took a walk up on the hill behind This Old House.
There was a light rain and some gusty wind,
with the most unusal golden light sky – just beautiful.
Shortly after the rainfall, up over the house…
was this..   a double rainbow
I could see most of the rainbow’s arch, but it was very hard to capture all of it in one frame…
Can you see the double rainbow ring below?

* Author Donald Ahrens in his text Meteorology Today describes a rainbow as “one of the most spectacular light shows observed on earth”. Indeed the traditional rainbow is sunlight spread out into its spectrum of colors and diverted to the eye of the observer by water droplets.
* The traditional description of the rainbow is that it is made up of seven colors – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Actually, the rainbow is a whole continuum of colors from red to violet and even beyond the colors that the eye can see.
The colors of the rainbow arise from two basic facts:
Sunlight is made up of the whole range of colors that the eye can detect. The range of sunlight colors, when combined, looks white to the eye. This property of sunlight was first demonstrated by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666.
Light of different colors is refracted by different amounts when it passes from one medium (air, for example) into another (water or glass, for example).
*Sometimes we see two rainbows at once, what causes this? We have followed the path of a ray of sunlight as it enters and is reflected inside the raindrop. But not all of the energy of the ray escapes the raindrop after it is reflected once. A part of the ray is reflected again and travels along inside the drop to emerge from the drop. The rainbow we normally see is called the primary rainbow and is produced by one internal reflection; the secondary rainbow arises from two internal reflections and the rays exit the drop at an angle of 50 degrees° rather than the 42°degrees for the red primary bow.
*Notice the contrast between the sky inside the arc and outside it. When one studies the refraction of sunlight on a raindrop one finds that there are many rays emerging at angles smaller than the rainbow ray, but essentially no light from single internal reflections at angles greater than this ray. Thus there is a lot of light within the bow, and very little beyond it. Because this light is a mix of all the rainbow colors, it is white. In the case of the secondary rainbow, the rainbow ray is the smallest angle and there are many rays emerging at angles greater than this one. Therefore the two bows combine to define a dark region between them – called Alexander’s Dark Band, in honor of Alexander of Aphrodisias who discussed it some 1800 years ago!

A request

I received an e-mail  this morning from a friend who lives down the road. I don’t know a more courageous group of women…”C” has lost her husband and son to muscular dystrophy, and her two daughters, both in their forties, are afflicted as well.  When her children were born she did not know of her husband’s eventual diagnosis, which is hereditary and passed on to offspring.

Good-morning all….

* Maryellen  started with a sniffle Sunday morning in church. She didn’t want to expose anyone to germs and went to the back of the church during the “passing of the peace”, not to shake hands. You just gotta love this girl.

Monday afternoon she called  – her husband was taking her to the Yale New Haven Hospital ER. Four hours later she was released. Her xrays looked good and in fact they were better than the ones taken in July when she was admitted. They gave her some pills and sent her on her way.

Tuesday AM, while at my weekly Bible study I got a call from my daughter *Erin.  *Maryellen  was in trouble and needed me. Her husband  was at work in Norwalk…..a good hour and a half away. I’m only 20 minutes away. She had called her doctor and he wanted her to go the the ER in New Haven. He even suggested she call an ambulance. “OH NO”….was *Maryellen’s response. “My Mom will take me”. Well Mom is getting a little too old to handle these situations again……but Mom did. God is so good to me and gives me the strength to do what is needed.

*Maryellen’s  O2 sats were 82 and heart rate 118 when I arrived. I boosted her O2 up to 5 liters from 3 and drove her to the ER reminding her all the way that she needed to call 911 in the future. They could get there quicker than I and had all the necessary equipment on board to treat her quickly and could start an IV. Have you ever noticed when your talking to your kids and you know when what your saying is going in one ear and out the other?????

Well, 7 hours later  *Maryellen was admitted. During those 7 hours we found out she had a collapsed lung, given fluids via IV for dehydration, and allergic reaction to an IV antibiotic, a shot to take care of that, then vomitting for a good 45 minutes, another shot to take care of that, about 10 bottles of blood taken but only after they brought in a machine, ultra-sound, to find her veins. By the time she was put in a bed on the 6th floor she was exhausted and looked like she had been in a battle. Well…..actually she had been.

It was time to head home for me. Picked up a delicious cheeseburger at Burger King and sat in the car with visions of sitting by a nice lake, sipping a real good red wine, dining on a good steak, baked potato, green beans and romantic piano music playing in the back ground……..Boy do I know how to dream. All this while listening to Steven Tyler and Aerosmith singing Dream On…. There is nothing like hearing Aerosmith when your down in the dumps. On my bucket list is to see them in concert someday.

Back home I had the glass of wine, watched the results from Dancing with The Stars and so happy to see Pam Anderson go home. Oh What A Night!

Prayers please for my girl *Maryann  and her hubby *Daniel.

Blessings all…”

So I’m sending a request to all you prayer warriors out there… say a few for my friend “C”,  *Maryann,  her husband *Daniel and  sister  *Erin.     They’re fighting one heck of a fight and I truly believe in the power of people coming together, sending healing thoughts out into the universe.
